Chat with Friends
Today my homestay mother’s friends came to our house. Annette wanted the man to repair the swimming pool for her. After they finished, we chated outside.
They are very kind people. We talked about the Chinese food, Chinese words.
They were surprise when we said we made the decision of learning in Canada. The woman said she couldn’t let her daughter go out for a few days. She will be crazy.
I feel the relationship between people live here is very kind. They help each others and they are always kind. For example, they came to help us but they took the pizza and popcorn for us. Also when we took bus everyday, the bus driver was very nice.
Another thing is the popcorn tasted salty. That’s funny.

Installed Ubuntu 7.10 Beta
Yesterday was a fantastic day, because I could run Ubuntu on my laptop. I had heard about Linux when I was in primary school. I tried to get one and use it, but always couldn't achieve it. Sometime my parents didn't buy it for me(the Internet was not that strong in that days), or sometimes I didn't have a computer for my own use(if I installed Linux, others couldn't use the computer), or most of the time my laptop didn't support Linux.
Before I came to Canada, I bought a DELL XPS M1330. At that time I had Ubuntu LiveCD of 7.04. I tried it at once after I got the laptop. But unfortunatly, my laptop didn't support it. I couldn't even get into the multi-user part. And I tried Sayabon, Ubuntu 7.10 tribe 4 and so on. All of the doesn't work except Gentoo. But I still couldn't use X with Gentoo and only could land into the command line. Maybe I could install Gentoo by compile, but I didn't had a WLAN connection at home and I had no experiences of using Gentoo. So I had to give up.
Yesterday I was thinking about Ubuntu 7.10 would be released in October and maybe I can use it on my laptop. And then I got the news about the beta version of Ubuntu 7.10 had been released from Linux Desktop Chinese. Then I downloaded the LiveDVD at once and burned it.
After I burned it, I tried to reboot my laptop. After about 3 to 5 minutes wait(so slow!), I got the good result. The whole system works well. A note said there were a strict driver could be installed. It was the driver of my nVidia video card. That meant I could use CompizFusion! I tried to played a video in the ``Examples'' folder, and the sound card worked well! What made me surprise was when I tried to get connect to the wireless internet, I hit the icon on the panel and it already searched all the wireless internet connection. The internet connection worked well after I did some settings(password, SSID).
I was so happy that I could use Linux on my laptop. I had tried several versions of Linux before but I couldn't let them work well. Sometimes I didn't got a laptop and sometimes my laptop(DELL Inspiron 8000) didn't support Linux(do not have driver of video card on Linux). Now my DELL XPS M1330 supports Linux well. I think I can write a post on Linux on Laptops.

Got a Praise
Today Garson and I did a presentation in the listening class. Our instructor Dennis let us to listen an interview and give a presentation about what have the interview said about. There were several topic of interview that we could choose, and Garson and I choosed one about “The Size of Eggs and Sperm”.
Actually, I myself didn’t pay so much attention on the presentation. But I found a good way. I kept listening it if I took my iPod with me. So I knew a lot about the interview. And another result was I remember all the parts of the interview well. I didn’t watch my notes much when I gave the presentation.
After the class, Dennis praised us about the presentation. He said to us out of the classroom. He said we made all the parts clearly. That made me very happy.

News
On last Friday, my speaking instructor Linda let us to take a piece of news essay on the newspaper and get the summary. I didn’t finish the work until this noon.
On the day befor yesterday, I asked my homestay mother Annette if there were any recently newspaper at home. She gave me a Sep, 22th one and said she could get a newer one on the next day. And this morning she gave me a newspaper of Sep, 25th.
I had the speaking lesson in the afternoon, so I started to find news after lunch. I found some interesting news such as the UN meeting talked about the world climate, the privacy of Google Inc. There was one made me a bit surprise. The University of Winnipeg would cancel classes over the security fear. I had heard from the CTV news about there was something dangerous happened in the campus. A person shoted others. And the other students were talking or holding a vote for something. It seems there was relationship between the two matters. And the University of Winnipeg was so near to us. To take a No.14 bus to Downtown, we can arrive there. We had been there before our class started. And the whole thing sounds unbelievable.
Linda talked a bit about this thing on the afternoon class. She said on the paper today, there was a whole page about this. She felt surprise that I had heard it.

Fieldtrip
Today all the students of English Language Centre has a field trip. We left school at 9:00am and we went there by schoolbus. The field was far from our school. We spent about 40 minutes to there.
The field we played is like a large playground. There were cart, baseball and golf. We could play both of them. There was also a little shop for selling drink and food. We could also sit there since it was much warmer in the shop than outside.
There were also some game machines in the shop. I tried some of them. At first, I tried a game likes Axe. I sent 25c in the machine but it didn’t work. Then I tried another machine with the game “Pinball” beside. I sent $1 but still didn’t work. I felt it was so expensive that spent $1 but did nothing so I asked my money back from the manager.
The manager was very kind. She asked how much I sent and then gave my money back. But I forgot the extactly amount of money I sent and I said $1.50. She gave me $1.50 and asked me to tell her which machine was bad. Then I showed her the two machines. At the first one, she pasted a note said “doesn’t work”. But after she checked the second one, she said it still worked. Then she pressed a button and the game started. I continued playing and she forgot to asked the $1 back.
The game Pinball'' is like the game3D Pinball” in Microsoft Windows. There were some balls and I controlled two boards to keep the balls not fall. After I spent all the 3 balls, the machine told me I got some bouns balls for my high mark. I kept got high mark and always got bouns balls. Suddenly the game stoped and I thought that might be the limit of the machine.
There were still some games I didn’t play, because I had a presentation tomorrow. So I sit on a chair and listened to the material of the presentation. The temperater was so low. The feeling was awful. Luckily I stood to the time we left.

Speaking Presentation
This afternoon we had the second speaking presentation. This time was about interview. There were several topics we can choose and I choose the term “censorship”.
I have interviewed my homestay mother, Annette, but haven’t interview any other internetational students. Actually, I just interviewed myself as the second person. I didn’t prepare it very long. I just felt there was nothing to prepare.
There are 12 students in our class. This time I was the 9th one to do the presentation. I felt a bit nervous. I went to the washroom before the class began but I still felt not good when my turn comes. Just then a student went to the washroom and I said “do everyone want a rest, and could you give me 2 minutes for me to go to the washroom”. After got the permit form the instructor, I ran to the washroom. Suddenly I found that a lot of boys came after me. They all wanted to go to the washroom!
Before I talked, I felt I couldn’t speak all the five minutes. But I have talked about 10 minutes this time. I even didn’t know what I had said.

One Month Celebration
A month ago, on Aug 23, 2007, I left China from Beijing Internetional Airport. And since the difference of timezone, we arrived at Winnipeg on Aug 23, 2007 again. From that time to now, I’ve spent a whole month here.
I, with my parents, drove to Beijing on Aug 22. We lived in Beijing Guangxi Hotel. A friend of my father received us. In the afternoon, I washed myself and had a rest. At night, father’s friend invited us to a restaurant for supper. I tried Maotai there.
After supper, we went back to the hotel. And I downloaded some useful software by the internet in the hotel. Since I didn’t have high speed internet connection in my home, I hadn’t installed any software before.
The sleep was nice. On the next day, we had a simple breakfast and lunch. Then we drove to the airport. On the airport, we met the other three friends who also went to Canada with me. We went accross the customs about 1 hour before the plane leave. It was a complex thing to do that. When I went accross a port, the officer got some touthpastes and ink from my handbag. She used a plastic bag to cover those stuff. But since there were not enough space of the plastic bag, I had to drop a touthpaste.
On the time we wait to check out, I suddenly felt a bit nervous. There were a lot of foreigners to take a same plane. It gave me a feeling that I AM the foreigner, not them. Can I explain myself to them well? I was not sure.
We quickily found our seats on the plane. Luckily, our seats was very near. Everything seemed well, before we got a list of customs declaration to fill. We hadn’t seen it before and we were not sure how to fill them. So we could just guess. Luckily it was OK when we went accross the customs of Canada.
The internetional plane made me very tired. Sometime I wanted to sleep, and sometime I couldn’t get into asleep. In a few hours before we arrived at Vancouver, I couldn’t sleep at all. that time was very boring.
After we arrived at Vancouver, we had to apply our study permit. That costed us very long time. Hopefully we had already rechecked another plane, or else we would miss the plane to Winnipeg.
Then they wanted to call there family, I also think I should called my homestay mother for telling her we had rechecked the plane. They bought a kind of card that can make internetional calls. Each call costed us 25 cents more for getting connected with the service of the card. All of them couldn’t call their family successfully except me. I called Annette to tell her we rechecked the plane and please her to pick us later.
There were some extra time after we called. We had some food. I bought a sandwich, costed me about 10 dollars. It tasted delicious, but the process I bought it was pain. I couldn’t understand the seller well, at last the seller explained me what a “turkey” is! That was very shame.
We took a very small plane from Vancouver to Winnipeg. The food and drink on the plane was priced, not free, what we thought before. So I just asked a cup of water, that was free. The plane was not slow, we arrived at Winnipeg at about 11 o’clock. Our homestay mother, Annette, was waiting us on the port.
She drove us home and told us about the house. There were only one internet port in my home, so only me could get connect to the internet at room. I tried to buy $10.00 Skype credits by my VISA card, it was unsuccess. Then I tried again but using Paypal, successed. And I called my mother to tell her I arrived peacefully…

Mid-Autumn Celebration
Since we will be very busy during the weekdays, we four celebrated the mid-autumn day tonight. We have bought some materials yesterday and we had the “hot pot” tonight.
In the afternoon, Forrest, Garson and me went to Kelin’s house. In the early, we three boys played soccer on a large grass field near Kelin’s house. About 4:00, we went back and had a short rest. Then we cooked the hot pot. And we take some photos before we had them.
The supper lasted about two hours. It was very strange that we felt very full but it seemed we didn’t have that much. And we didn’t feel the supper was very long until we saw the clock.
After meal, we clean the table. At that time, I felt so tired. Not only sleepy I felt, but I also felt my thigh very sour. A felt into asleep on the chair for a while.
We left Kelin’s house at about 9 o’clock. On the way home, we talked about the songs and the time when we were in China. In all, it is a nice day and tired day.
P.S. I didn’t took any camera this afternoon, so I had to post the photos by others. You may see some photos on Kelin’s Blog. I will also upload some photos to my album on Flickr, you may see them a few minites later.
Mid-Autumn Celebration(pre)
A few days later, we will have Chinese Traditional Festival, Mid-Autumn Day. In that day, Chinese family get together. And we four friends from China planned to have supper together to celebrate it. At the begining, we decided to have supper in a Chinese restruant. Later someone said he wanted have hot pot, so then we decided to have it in family. It will much cheaper to cook ourselves.
After class yesterday, we four went to a Chinese “supermarket” named Wen-Kai. It’s a tiny market for selling Chinese food and some Japanese and Korean stuff. We bought some meterial for hot pot and the mooncakes. They costed us about 80 dollars.
So we will have it this afternoon. I can’t wait!

A Bad Feeling Today
This afternoon, we had a long speaking class. During the class, my instruction Linda let us to discuss some problems in groups. There are 12 students in my class, and we were seprated into 3 groups. In my group, I was the leader that keep the discuss going.
I did what a leader should do. I read the question to the group members and ask their idea. In one turn, it a girl’s turn. For showing polite, I always looked at the person who are talking about his or her idea. But when I looked at that girl, I felt I wanted to smile suddenly. And then a smile came to my face.
That girl was a bit annoyed. She kept asking me what I was laughing at. I couldn’t explain the reason because it came suddenly and even I myself didn’t know why I was laughing. Since the instructor didn’t allow us to speak Chinese during class time, I tried to explain in English. Maybe I didn’t discribed myself very clearly, the girl might felt I was thinking something bad at that time. At last, the girl was a bit angry.
After class, I went to the girl and explain to her in Chinese and gave her a genuine apology. She said “That’s OK”. But I still felt she wasn’t happy at all. And that made me not laughing all the afternoon.

Resume Workshop
This afternoon, I attended the second resume workshop class. And this class is the first academic class I attended in Canada. I’m learning in English Language Centre now and I have classes about English writing, reading, listening and speaking everyday. Though they are helpful, they are a little boring. The reason, I think, is language is a kind of most fundational class. You will feel boring when you learning them, especially you have known it not too little before.
Resume workshop class is different. It’s the class teaches me a useful skill will be used in the future. It’s not like to teach language that let you to think all about languages, but to teach you some kind of details. For example, in the resume workshop class, the instructor will tell me the format of a resume, and how to write some specific parts of a resume.
I feel so exciting when attend this kind of class. This REAL class is very useful and will tell me a lot of things that I haven’t heard before. That’s much fun than to attend English class.

ATOM? RSS?
This blog is almost perfect for me to use except I don’t know how to make the entries to be outputed totally. Now, if I browse “http://ferrisliu.com/atom.xml”, I will only get the summary of my essay. I always hate to publish only summary on RSS, so I have to find out a way to output my essays completely.
This night I spent a lot of time to try, but I can’t find the choice for outputing the whole text. At last, I give up. I had post a question on V2EX, but till now, nobody answered.
Just before I tried to burn a feed on Feedsky since Feedburner had been blocked in China. After I inputed the address of this blog, they told me there are two feed address and I had to choose one. One was ATOM, the other one was RSS. I was confused. One my page, there is only ATOM. Then I tried to browse “http://ferrisliu.com/rss.xml”. You know what I got? I got all of my essays outputed completely.
I’m not sure the differences between the two, so I found it on Google. Then I got some pages(1|2). But I still don’t know why I can get a complete output from RSS, not ATOM? The essays I just found told me the ATOM which is leaded by Google, is newer than RSS 2.0. And ATOM is more function. So to use ATOM is a better choice. But I still don’t know how to output my essays completely, so I had to use RSS now. I hope I will get the anwsers from V2EX.
Success!
After almost two days time trying, I run Movable Type on my new site finally. This is the first time for me to use Movable Type, so it’s very funny. Though I’ve met some problems, I made it now. The happiness now just can’t be discribed.
I bought a new domain name for this blog. In the first days, especially after I’v changed my English name, I would like to open a new blog to write something in English. My original blog Feng’s Style have been existed some time, and all of the posts on it is written in Chinese. I wouldn’t like to add any English posts on it cause it will be mess. Also I’d like to have a domain name that like my English name, not my original name, so I choose this domain “ferrisliu.com”.
Before I installed Movable Type on my host, I felt afraid a bit. Since I’ve never tried to understand Movable Type, even cgi programs, I thought maybe to install it is very difficult. But after I read the instruction on the offical site of Movable Type, everything came clearly. Actually at the very begining, I installed Movable Type succussfully. But I don’t know how to show the blog page when I browse ferrisliu.com'' notferrisliu.com/blog”. That spent my a whole day to solve it.
I have written a post on V2EX to ask about it, the comment on it is very helpful. After thought for a while, I solved it finally. I was so happy that you can browse “ferrisliu.com” to visit my blog.
Movable Type is still quite new for me. I haven’t seen all the pages of it. I think it is a wonderful tool for managing a blog. I hope I will master it just like WordPress.
I just finished installing Movable Type 4.01!
Welcome to my new blog powered by Movable Type. This is the first post on my blog and was created for me automatically when I finished the installation process. But that is ok, because I will soon be creating posts of my own!
